DfT aims to enhance sustainable travel by providing £60m to LAs and LEPs

The scheme was launched on 5th July 2016 and is open for local councils to apply for a share of £60 million of funding to boost walking and cycling across the UK. This scheme will give financial backing over a space of three years from 2017 – 2020 and as stated by Robert Goodwill, The Cycling and Walking Minister, is “aimed at starting innovative and sustainable council projects.” The scheme is open to councils across the UK (excluding London) with the deadline falling on the 9th of September.

Councils are encouraged to work together in their proposal as well as with Local Enterprise Partnerships to boost cycling and walking. Councils will be asked to put forward 10% of the scheme cost.

This competition hopes to Support walking and cycling in order to reduce carbon emissions and air pollution. It is also aimed at improving people’s access to work and education along with enhancing both their capabilities and opportunities.
