Oxley Primary School, Leicestershire
About the client
Oxley Primary, a Local Authority School in Shepshed, Loughborough, catering for over 250 children aged 4-11.
Drivers for the project
The school has an increasing energy demand and also operates out of school hours providing wraparound care for children requiring lighting heat and power from 7.40am-6pm. With increasing pressure on school budgets the need to reduce costs are important.
Solution
Following a detailed site review the replacement of the existing aged and inefficient lighting was identified as a way to make a significant reduction in energy use and improve the educational environment. In addition, the buildings design and orientation made the installation of a solar PV array a cost effective option to produce energy on site and minimise grid energy consumption. The solutions identified achieve over 50% reduction in energy costs, with the solar PV delivering approximately 25,000kWh per annum. The lighting project delivers an improved educational environment throughout the school with reduced maintenance needs. The solar PV not only generates a significant portion of the schools energy needs but dashboard data from the inverter offers live access to all classes of energy produced and CO2 and energy cost savings in simple presentation format allowing excellent educational opportunities as well as access to how the system is performing for the schools leaders.
Results
The project was delivered on budget and on time thanks to the close working relationship with the team at Oxley School and CIS. The solar PV system was installed and commissioned within a week and includes remote access to a live data portal to share with staff and pupils, providing a key stage learning tool for all ages of students to learn about solar PV and other renewable energies.
