Grove Primary School, a Local Authority school in Cambridge, catering for 260 pupils and with a capacity of 420 children aged 4-11.

Drivers for the project

The school had poor quality lighting that was expensive to run and required consistent maintenance due to failing fittings. In addition, the school leadership team looked to reduce energy costs and to reduce emissions, the solar PV system specified offered both a money saving self-generation opportunity and an educational opportunity for staff and pupils through live access portal to the system.

Solution

CIS designed and specified a replacement lighting solution for all the areas of the school where there was old poor quality lighting. This provided a much improved educational environment, significant cost savings and reduced maintenance. The scheme is backed by a 5 year no quibble warranty. In addition CIS designed and installed a 50kWp solar PV array taking advantage of an optimal roof orientation. This will provide a significant amount of the annual electricity requirement for the school and a reduction in CO2 emissions.

Results

The solar PV system was installed in 1 week over the summer holiday period. CIS installed as part of the project a portal offering simultaneous access to all classes to review a clear dashboard of data including cost and CO2 saving data in a clear graphical format to allow projects on the environment and renewable energy based on the schools own system. System efficiency is backed by a performance guarantee for the school.

The lighting has been well received with a marked improvement in the educational environment throughout the school. Works were completed with no impact to the day to day running of the school and robust measures were taken to carry out the works ensuring strict compliance with COVID19 guidelines.
